Crooks at The Garage, London

I was fortunate enough to join the band Crooks at their debut UK headline show at The Garage in London. This gig was a very special night for the band, and everyone else involved. It was a culmination of hard work, and it paid off.

Below are a selection of images from the day, during soundcheck, the lead up to their performance and the performance itself.

Your Illuminations UK tour - Feb, 2016

In mid February I was asked to join friends in a band called Your Illuminations on a 6 day tour of the country. On my travels, I visited Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle, Birmingham, London and Leeds.

My main goal for the tour was to use as much natural light as possible, and take every shot as a snapshot of what each individual may have been doing at any given moment, as opposed to trying to pre determine anything.

Below all the photos follow the chronological order of each date on the tour.

Manchester, day 1:

Dave, outside Fac 251 after their soundcheck whilst pondering over where to get some food.

Dave, Rich, and Liam walking through Manchester to find somewhere to eat.

Rich, taken outside a supermarket on Manchester's Oxford Road.

Dave, taken inside Fac 251 whilst warming up. He and Robbie would do this every night, and it was always a pleasure to watch and capture.

Liam, taken in Fac 251 whilst watching Robbie and Dave warm up.

Birmingham, day 4:

Robbie, taken as the band were preparing for soundcheck at the Rainbow.

Rich, taken outside of the Rainbow just as we were all deciding on a place to eat after soundcheck.

Brett, who was our driver for the tour and overall great guy. He put up with late night drives, and incessant joking, most of which were pretty bad, but he helped keep the tour fun, and it was a pleasure to get to know him.

London, day 5:

Robbie, taken during soundcheck at the Surya.

Liam, taken during soundcheck at the Surya.

Dave, taken in the dressing room at the Surya. Most days during the tour I wanted to try and capture moments like this, a pure candid moment, and I was lucky that the band had complete confidence in me to be themselves and let me be the fly on the wall so to speak.

Photography project

The project is to increase understanding for those who have been directly affected by mental and physical health conditions. It is still in its beginning stages, but I am hoping that with this example, and by stressing the importance of this project to me that the interest for it will spread.

2015 in photos.

2015 saw me begin the year using the first kit I ever owned, a Pentax KX, to upgrading to the Canon 5DMKIII, which was quite the quantum leap forward, but I have since taken some of my best work in my opinion to date. Here in this blog post I have tried to whittle down my top 15 favourite photos of the year.

I want to send a big thank you to all of the publications, and PR agencies who have given me the opportunities I have had in 2015, from shooting small clubs in Manchester to the main stage at Slam Dunk festival, and Hevy Festival; it has all been amazing.

Fall Out Boy at Manchester Arena.

Why I chose this first image was basically because it was the first time I had ever shot a gig at the legendary Manchester Arena, and not only that, but I had spent many occasions going to concerts there growing up.

Foxing at Sound Control, Manchester

As a photographer it is your job to composition what you have in front of you, and with music photography sometimes those moments are handed to you, other times, you have to think outside of the box a little more. On this occasion, there was no barrier and the stage was at a good level so my job was already made easy before I even shot anything. Having never listened to the band Foxing before photographing them, all I heard from my fellow photographer friend Jay was that they were a lot of fun to shoot. Needless to say, he was right, I had such fun capturing them, and this shot encompasses that perfectly I think.

Arcane Roots at O2 Ritz, Manchester

During Arcane Roots set on this occasion the lights were dimmed low, with only really any light coming from behind. Usually in these circumstance they can be a photographer's worst nightmare, but I managed to work a way around this, and by using the situation to my advantage  I managed to compose the band in a silhouetted style. This shot became my favourite because I think it stands out.

Bayside at Slam Dunk Festival, Leeds

This photo perfectly reflects the feeling this band had whilst on stage that day, and I am glad I was there to capture it.

Lower Than Atlantis at O2 Ritz, Manchester

I had the pleasure of shooting Lower Than Atlantis again 2015, and it was quite a spectacle. The reason why I chose this photo, was because the band had some of the best lighting I had ever witnessed, and really made my job that much easier, and brought the photos to life.

Creeper at Hevy Fest, Kent

This festival was probably the epitome of friendship, I met so many fantastic people that weekend, from photographers, musicians, and more. I left this festival feeling enthusiastic about what I do, and I owe that to the people I met.

Your Illuminations at Edge Recording Studio

2015 also saw me take on some of my first paid assignments, and the first group to take a chance on me were the lovely lads in Your Illuminations. I spent a weekend with them as they put finishing touches to some new material they had recorded. They gave me free roam to shoot whatever I wanted to, and to say I am grateful for that is an understatement, I was very lucky to have been able to shoot whatever I wished, and document the band as naturally as I could. This shot is one of my favourites from that weekend, taken during a session with the guitarist Robbie.

Drug Church at Manchester Academy 2

In the last few months of 2015 I started using the double exposure feature in my camera, and lately I've been enjoying the results, such as this photo. I like how in my eyes, it perfectly captures the movement in the musician.

Crooks at Hevy Fest, Kent

I love this photo, and on a side note, this band's latest album 'Are We All The Same Distance Apart' is breathtaking.

Saint Raymond at Dot To Dot Festival, Manchester

I was lucky enough to win a competition as an official photographer for the festival, and it was a dream come true to have my passion understood and respected in such a profound way.

Foxing at Sound Control, Manchester

Basically, I love the detail in this photo and that's why it made the cut.

Fall Out Boy at Manchester Arena

Pete Wentz doing, well what he does best, amping up the crowd the up.

You Me At Six at Slam Dunk Festival, Leeds

I love this photo of the the band, they were just fantastic to watch, and capture.

NOFX at O2 Academy, Leeds

Love this shot, it's about as perfect as it gets.

Stick To Your Guns at Hevy Festival, Kent

I love this band's energy, and last album is brilliant. I think this image encapsulates their energy when they perform.
